Indonesian packaging manufacturer SJG is a market pioneer with its Netstal machines

The packaging sector features extremely aggressive pricing, and many people believe that the best way to survive is by using cheap production plants. But the opposite is the case. That is why Albert Tanoni, General Manager of the Indonesian packaging specialist PT Sinar Jatimulia Gemilang, is going against the grain and prefers Swiss quality machines and molds. In doing so, he has elevated SJG positioning above the competitors.

One can sense the strategic mind: In 2012, PT Sinar Jatimulia Gemilang (SJG) decided to focus entirely on food and industrial packaging – and achieved growth rates of 15-20 percent annually. In 2015, the company dared to do something new once again by purchasing its first high-speed machine from Netstal as well as a Swiss precision mold. This step also turned out to be successful and, as a result, the next Netstal machine founds its way to SJG in 2017. With his focus on high-quality equipment, Albert Tanoni is a pioneer on the Indonesian packaging market and consciously chose a strategy that is opposite that of his competitors. The Bekasi-based company supplies international brands such as McDonald's, NISSIN and Oreos, as well as regional providers, for example those making instant noodles. To do so, the company's 140 employees work in three shifts and manufacture products such as disposable cutlery, thin-walled cups, PET preforms or closures. In the area of industrial packaging, 4-liter and 20-liter buckets, e.g. those for paint, dominate. The product that started it all – beverage crates – is still part of the company's repertoire. In addition to plastics processing, printing technology is another business sector.

Products for international brands

The first Netstal machine, an ELION 2800, was purchased in 2015 for a project that hung in the balance. In Asia, cookies are usually sold in cups so the consumer can pour milk on them and eat them with a spoon. Albert Tanoni remembers: "We got the business in 2012 from an international customer Kraft. The machine with which we produced IML-decorated thin-wall cups back then did not run well: unstable processes, reject rates of more than 10 percent, high energy consumption. We were unhappy and faced the decision of either investing in high-quality technology or scrapping the project altogether. Then I convinced my shareholders to use Swiss injection molding machines and molds. Thanks to them the strategy was approved. When it comes to top brand customers there is no room for mistakes." Netstal's assurances regarding the performance of the machines made the decision easier and also offered the perspective of being able to quickly recoup the purchasing cost thanks to improved cycle times and reduced reject rates. By now, the 13-gram thin wall cup is reliably produced in a 6-cavity mold with a cycle time of just 3.6 seconds.

"We ensure product quality right from our initial investment. "We take the right machine, the right tools and the right people."

Formula for product quality

Albert Tanoni has learned that the issue of quality takes care of itself in this process: "We are ensuring the quality of the products with our initial investment. We choose the right machine, the right mold and the right people. When all of that is in place, then our employees can easily achieve top product qualities." By the way, the strategy also includes obtaining top quality labels for in-mold labeling from Japan and Europe. And customers reward these efforts because they can purchase high quality packagings from SJG at an attractive price. In addition, "Swiss Machinery" enjoys an outstanding reputation in Indonesia.

In 2016, when a new 4-liter paint bucket weighing 190 grams was supposed to be produced, the decision to use another Netstal machine was easy. Ultimately, an Elion 4200 that produces PP and HDPE products in a 2-cavity mold, was chosen. When the cooling is set perfectly, a cycle time of nine seconds is sufficient.

The tremendous output of the high-speed machines from Netstal, their outstanding availability and the precisely manufactured parts provide SJG with major advantages on the market. Therefore it is no surprise that Albert Tanoni emphasizes that "when we are looking to make our next investments, we will certainly consider Netstal."
